Having it is definitely useful if you can use it at will, if for nothing else than at least to have it in case you run out of options in a fight, could save your life.

However, controlling it definitely seems sketchy. Perhaps making sacrifices to Hircine will convince him to grant you blessings. The companions do worship him, they end up seeking his totems, so maybe thats why they can control it. Maybe you just have to embrace the wolf to control it, not resist it.

And as for me personally, I think I would like Hircine’s hunting grounds for an afterlife. Certainly beats Coldharbor. I think the biggest thing about that is do you have to give up your human form forever? Or do you still get to have peaceful moments in the forest where you can meditate and be mindful and still remember who you are/were in life

Meanwhile Volkihar Vampires have a Gift, they dont burn at the sun only suffer mild discomfort, and Serana proves you can stay meal free for thousands of years without losing any of your eloquence, in fact not eating makes them more powerful up to a certain level

It really depends on how much you like Hircine. If you’re obsessed with the hunt and a devote follower of Hircine like Aela you’ll gladly embrace the gift of hunting alongside your master Hircine as one of his pack dogs.

But if you wish to serve the Nine and be given an afterlife of comfort, Lycanthropy is a bad deal. Same with Vampirism. Yes the immortality and extreme boost in power depending on who gifted you is great, but you’re serving Molag Bal, the Daedra who raped/rapes vampires into existence as a cruel and unusual method of spreading his influence. And ending up in his domain is a terrible deal even if you’re a devoted worshipper.

For me it was always way better than being the vanilla vampire. Although, if you are in your human form random NPC’s will forever comment on how you smell like wet dog.

My woodelf stealth archer/battle mage character has yet to transform, but once given the opportunity he’ll be keeping hircines gift. He is already the champion of all the deadric princes with the exception of boethia, azura and vermina. Spending interinity in the huntsground sounds fun.

Vampirism is a far better deal, honestly. Immortality, blood magic, vampire lord form, sharper senses, and so on. Sure, if you die you end up in Coldharbour. But unlike a Werewolf, Vampires have a chance at living forever. Weres, unfortunately, are still mortal.

Isent the point of a werewolf that u cant control yourself after transformation. The whole ide that u can control it is becouse of gameplay and u just said to ignore gameplay so no u wouldent be able to control yourself. Thats why pretty mutch anytime in almost any game when u come across a werewolf they are totally feral and for infected ppl living in comunitys they very often try to isolate themself behind a sturdy locked door or in a dark cave when they know its time for the transformation to not risk killing there entire village.

Played as one for some time found travel amazing, night time was yours, good cqc dps down sides don’t have the health to live a full on fight if you fight more that 3 or 4 npcs you die. the vampire was best travel was better as you could fly and had skills to regain your health.

As a Dunmer I prefer Vampire, in any other case after I max leveled the important perks I become a werewolf.

Always hated how your wolf form is identical regardless of your race. Always felt there should be slight differences. Like a kahjiit would be more feline an argonian would have some scales, a wood elf werewolf would be smaller than a nord or orc werewolf etc

Yeah, it’s cool if you enjoy chaos playstyle ruining cities and killing innocents… It’s cool to turn the first time or to turn in front of bandits demonstrating their coming doom. But come on, the usual gameplay is “walking down the road, spotted some necromancers. Drag the bow and shoot, loot the bodies and keep moving”. Instead you have to stand there transforming, taking damage, one-punch the 3 guys and… that’s it, you can keep moving on in this werewolf form. Kill some mudcrabs, scare the shit out of khajiit peddlers, maybe kill a bear. Nothing you couldn’t do without the form. Some skills and abilities seem fun but are quite annoying when you have to choose what to use in a battle. A shitload is wasted. I never bother with buff potions. How tough should a battle be to need +20% damage? Self-healing magic in battle? But you’d take even more damage while healing. And if you don’t, why didn’t you avoid damage in the first place? Shouts for buff? Why? Take 10 sec to switch and shout and… what? Kill bandits in 2-3 hits anyway? Instead of 4? Do you pay real money for each swing or something? Maybe for the ebony warrior you need every bit of buff and heal… But normally it’s a waste of time to use any kind of superpower. Even switching to magic from your main damage weapon is stupid. You pick 1 damage type and focus it. Otherwise you’ll just suck at everything at once.

Yeah, maybe I’m too reasonable for this game. I expect the best option while others enjoy this silly transformation and howling and running around as a naked dirty husky. I dunno… Feels weird to pick less optimal solutions.

Also, I always thought the Flea bag and Scuffed Batman progression systems should offer humanoid-form passives: not just benefits for the transformed state.

I mean a good bunch of the dialogue with the fang faces is all about how old and powerful they are: but really they’re not even vampire lords and the vampire lord progression system doesn’t have any bonuses outside of vampire lord form. So really the bat snouted blood suckers are kind of just huffing their own farts because their level scales higher than most other npcs.

I think both the crotch sniffers and neck nibblers progression systems should both have humanoid-form passive bonuses that a player can unlock. That’d give you more of a genuine reason to play them aside from just the minor passives you get by default.

I’ve gone into dungeons at levels much lower than I should have and just tossed and thrown everyone around. You just gotta learn not to take damage but you’ll get the hang of moving quickly dodging and thrashing with side power attacks. It’s more fun than everything vampirism gives you.

Amazing the Companions are so weak as a group of the most renowned fighters. They suck. But being a werewolf is the justice many in Skyrim need bursting in through their door at night.

I just walked out from the undercroft and stood waiting in the back patio of the companions building, waiting for it to wear off/the quest to trigger. did that my first time and every other time. I aint murderizing a town just because I, the mother fucking dragonborn, drank some measly blood… my dudes as composed as a cucumber, prolly kicking back in one of those chairs clumsily drinking mead in a form he’s never been in before, seeing if he gets him drunker to drink like this.

1: I would MUCH rather end up in the hunting grounds than coldharbor
2: werewolves have less overall benefits than vampires, but also less drawbacks as well.
3: if you can control it. It is much easier to blend into normal society.

My main reason for taking Hircines gift: It makes cleaning out dungeons and gravesides crawling with vampires considerably less of a pain in my ass. Being immune against all diseases, including but not limited to vampirism, saves me a lot of coin and inventory space normally wasted on a shit ton of cure disease potions and I don’t need to waste arrows shooting hawks for their feathers. 🪶🙃
Plus the hunting grounds as an afterlife sound actually pretty dope, provided you are the hunter of course. 🐺

Then they doubled down an did the same for Fallout. If they had left everything as it was and just let you invite friends to run around with then it would have been a good game. I think so long as you are willing to spend time going on hunts there will be no erratic transformations. The companions have very few issues, as they fully embrace the transformation. Sinding had issues because he wanted to keep it contained and never use it. It is also why the Ring of Hircine didn’t work for him.

Taking bandit quests would be a good solution for an average person. Fight dangerous adversaries and collect gold while you’re at it. Forsworn also fit into this category. Hircine stays happy and you make some money.

i mean as far as i know the reason sinding transformed against his will is because he went a really long time without transforming, theoretically theres nothing stopping you from going out into the woods, transforming, hunting animals and being completely fine when youre back. seems like an easy way to earn money to me

To be fair seeing as the curse is a gift by Hircine you kinda have to worship him to get the most out of it though you do get a shiny ring that gives you complete control should you refuse to murder sinding. Besides in ESO we get a look at his hunting grounds they are kinda beautiful in a way aside from the constant hunting.

Everybody forgets that technically speaking, since you’re dragonborn, akatosh just swoops in and scoops your soul when you die cause he gets priority claim over you since your soul is a shard of his.

I mean, as far as the powers go, Aela says it best: “Being a werewolf means nothing until you choose to use it.” And selling your soul is a non issue too, being that your soul belongs to Akatosh anyway who’ll just repo your soul from any Daedra.

I would say vampirism is the superior option, you don’t lose your soul to a Daedric Prince like werewolves do, and you’re functionally immortal anyway so an afterlife isn’t even on your agenda.

His hunting grounds is actually one of the better places to wind up. Unless your prey. Not everyone can be a hunter.

I use it for roleplay reasons. One of my favorite roleplay games was a character who was a nord who lived in the woods(alt start mod) and just hunted and sold pelts for money and supplies before going back out. He lived out in the woods so he wouldn’t hurt anyone. I had another mod for werewolves where you’d be forced to transform every full moon.

I love being a werewolf just for the talos amulet glitch for unlimited shouts, swear i have so many necklaces glitched onto my character it’s a miracle my game save even loads at this point🤣

Don’t forget you become litterally immune to disease which on its own is a mad perk. If you get a good grip on the transformations and never use the power then you’ll just be permanently immune to sickness for your life.

Modless and only if your role playing a warrior type. With mods it can be greatly improved, extending the werewolf perk tree, allowing alterations no armor perks to empower you, adding friendly random werewolf encounters, setting wild wolves to treat you neutrally, adding a werewolf themed town and playerhome or even adding a werebear alternative form thats slower but stronger. Personally i prefer modded vampirelord for mage/assassin/thief role plays. Sometimes neither.

If you can control it at will and still have all your intelligence while in wolf form then yes. But the side effects of never getting a good night’s sleep and never ending nightmares could cause mode swings and anger problems in the long run. Not to mention, when you eventually die, you go to Hercines hunting grounds (werewolf hell) where you will be hunted and killed by demons over and over again with no rest.

In my case I’d take the deal 100%. I’d move to the wilderness and live a long but simple life, only approaching civilization when I get a hold of the transformations. I’d seek to hunt down the monsters that may threaten the innocent, making of every life saved a living reminder of the great gifts that the Master of the Hunt can offer. And then, I’d join him for eternity in his hunting grounds, ready to feast and fight side by side with the Companions.

I mean what’s gonna happen when you die? Your soul is promised to damn near every god and daedric prince has your soul promised to them. It’s a real gamble. You may be forced to return to Akatosh given how much of him is stuffed in you.

On one of my hero play throughs I put the cursed ring on and played the game as normal BUT when my character changes I have to kill (not eat) everything in sight until I changed back. Crazy playing a good guy surrounded by guilt and hiding from guards.

Honestly, as far as afterlives go in the Elder Scrolls, you could do a whole lot worse than The Hunting Grounds. Running wild and hunting for eternity as a werewolf sounds pretty solid to me. Granted, if you’re sent there as prey, it’s really gonna suck. But that’s only if you’ve displeased Hircine, so it’s pretty easy to avoid. Probably one of the best planes of Oblivion to have as your afterlife. Especially when comparing it to spending eternity in Molag Bal’s hardcore BDSM sex dungeon.

Many years ago I was playing Skyrim. I decided to become a werewolf and I thought “cool” so I chilled as a werewolf for a while and I completed the companions quest line. Eventually I had the option to cure myself of being a werewolf. I decided not to do it and opted to come back and cure myself when I felt like it. I cured kodlak whitemane and went about my business. About a month later I decided I was tired of guards asking me if I had fur coming out of my ears so I went to cure myself. To my horror I realized I couldn’t cure myself and you can only do it when you’re doing the quest for kodlak.

I was actually sad and angry about it. I looked it up online and confirmed that there was no way for me to cure myself. I considered going back to the old save, but it wasn’t worth it. I told this story to my coworker, a 82 year old Canadian redneck. He told me “ohh man, all you gotta do is go to the vampires in the dawnguard DLC. They will get rid of your warewolf issue and then you can go to Markoth and a dude will cure you of being a vampire”….

Actually am curious how well a fully powered dragon born fares in the hunting grounds. Seeing how he killed plenty of really strong dragons. Wonder besides hircine himself what could beat the dragon born.
Also my werewolf is a khajit. So he still has a hunting form. Claws, teeth and as quick and silent as big cats. But with magic. And a very dangerous voice.

If the damn camera wasn’t locked in third person mode whenever you’re a werewolf or vampire lord it might be worthwhile to consider actually playing as one or the other, but since Bethesda was stupid enough to make a FIRST PERSON RPG with a FORCED THIRD PERSON MODE it ruins the entire experience.

I installed moonlit tales, turned off forced transformations, and flatly ignore being a werewolf. Great story idea ruined by piss poor execution.

For me I have the moonlight tales mod which is very nice skins and more perks eventually there’s one perk that increases unarmed damage and increases health and stamina by 50 then 100 points in human form so a nice little bonus to have if you don’t actually use beast form

Any race but I prefer Nord as it makes it interesting lore wise if you are both a worshipper of a daedra but also the descendant of Shor aka the Dragonborn and don’t get into Sovengarde. The Hunter of Hircine has one job. Hunt for Hircine. Skilled with a bow and their two sharpened war axes, the Hunter can kill any foe it comes across. Using shouts on occasion, the Hunter mainly focuses on stalking and precise striking. And if they are overwhelmed, they always have their Beast Form. They can transform into a werewolf and unleash Hircine’s Will onto unsuspecting prey. Fun build idea.
